Principal Investigator

Mounica Vallurupalli is a physician-scientist in Medical Oncology at Dana-Farber, an Instructor in Medicine at Harvard Medical School, and an Associate Member of the Broad Institute. As a physician-scientist, she cares for patients with hematologic malignancies.

She completed her medical training at Harvard Medical School where she was a HHMI Med Fellow in the Stegmaier Lab. She then went on to residency and chief medical residency in Internal Medicine at Brigham and Women's Hospital before completing her fellowship in Hematology and Oncology at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. She is a recipient of the Damon Runyon Physician-Scientist Training Award, BroadIgnite Award, Edward P. Evans Young Investigator Award, and the ASCI Emerging-Generation Award.

Her research operates at the intersection of functional genomics, glycobiology, and cancer immunology to answer questions about how glycans remodel the cell surface and promote immune evasion.

The Team

Sofia Mrowka

Sofia Mrowka

Research Associate

Undergraduate: Brown University

Sofia works on the mechanisms leukemia cells use to evade macrophage recognition, and is investigating new strategies to target leukemic glycoforms of CD43.

Margaret (Maggie) Hu

Damon Runyon SPARK Scholar · Research Associate

Undergraduate: Carleton College

Maggie characterizes glycan-mediated inhibition of macrophage phagocytosis in leukemia and is engineering macrophages as anti-leukemia therapies.

Zel Demere

ASCI PSSF Fellow

Undergraduate: Johns Hopkins University
Medical School: Weill Cornell Medical College

Zel uses iPSC-derived macrophages to generate CAR-macrophages. He is investigating how CAR-macrophages can target leukemia, and developing strategies to remodel their glycocalyx to enhance leukemic phagocytosis.
